Krumme Lake Grünau, Protected nature reserve in Treptow-Köpenick, Germany.
Krumme Lake Grünau is a protected nature reserve in Treptow-Köpenick featuring alder swamps, sedge meadows, and birch-oak forests covering about 45 hectares. The landscape is shaped by water channels and wetland features that create distinct zones of vegetation throughout the area.
The area formed during the ice age as a trough in the landscape and gradually became a low-lying wetland with accumulating vegetation. Over time, trees and shrubs grew throughout this moor, eventually creating the wooded wetland visible today.
The reserve serves as a place where visitors experience local wetland ecosystems and can observe how different habitats support wildlife. People come here to connect with nature and understand the role these landscapes play in protecting regional biodiversity.
The main entrance is at Hanff's Ruh in Grünau, which you can reach by tram and connect to paths leading toward Karolinenhof. Walking is easier during drier months since the terrain is generally marshy and wet throughout the year.
The meadows here host several hundred butterfly species that depend on the wetland and moorland habitats for survival. This insect diversity makes it one of Berlin's most important refuges for these delicate creatures.
