Sportdenkmal Berlin-Grünau

Sportdenkmal Berlin-Grünau, Sports memorial site near Dahme River in Grünau, Germany

The Sportdenkmal Berlin-Grünau was a pyramid structure made from approximately 300 inscribed stones contributed by water sports clubs from across Germany and positioned beside the regatta grandstand along the Dahme riverbank. The stones served as a record of the clubs that participated in supporting this athletic landmark.

The memorial was inaugurated in 1898 when Kaiser Wilhelm II attended the opening ceremony, underscoring the importance of sports to the German Empire. Decades later, in 1973, authorities from East Germany demolished the structure overnight.

The inscribed stones reveal how water sports clubs across the country viewed their role in promoting athletic pursuits. Visitors can still see these personal marks today, showing how widespread the commitment to rowing and water activities was.

Remaining fragments from the memorial are now on display at the Grünauer Water Sports Museum, which opens on Saturdays and allows visitors to examine the preserved stones. The museum is located near the original site along the riverbank.

The exact number of stones and their precise distribution following the 1973 demolition remains somewhat unclear, as some were scattered to different archives and museums across the region. These dispersed fragments today stand as a testament to the fragmentation of what was once a unified monument.
