Schloss Broich, Medieval castle in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany
Schloss Broich is a fortified castle on the Ruhr riverbank in Mülheim an der Ruhr with strong defensive walls and tall towers from different periods. The complex includes several historical buildings that together form a typical medieval fortification.
The castle was founded in 884 by Henry of Franconia to protect the Hellweg trade route from attacks. It was rebuilt and expanded several times later, especially during the Prussian period.
The name refers to its location along a river passage where merchant boats once traveled. Visitors can see how life here was connected to water and trade across the centuries.
The castle is easy to reach via well-marked paths and has an accessible trail with information boards about the architecture. Visitors will find guidance markers with QR codes that provide additional details in several languages.
Queen Louise of Prussia lived here from 1787 to 1791 and left behind personal belongings still visible in dedicated rooms today. This period marked the castle as one of the royal household's most important residences in the region.
