Terra Alta, Administrative division in western Tarragona Province, Spain
Terra Alta is a comarca in western Tarragona Province in Catalonia, encompassing several small municipalities across a hilly landscape. The territory covers about 743 square kilometers with mountains reaching up to 950 meters in elevation.
The region was known as Castellania during medieval times and fell under the governance of the Knights Hospitaller. This medieval past shaped the settlement patterns that later developed into the current municipalities.
The modernist wine cooperatives built in the 1920s by Cèsar Martinell show a distinctive architectural style rooted in Gaudí's influence. These buildings still shape the appearance of several villages across the region.
Gandesa is the main town and lies centrally within the comarca, serving as a good base for exploring the surrounding villages. The best time to visit is spring or autumn, when the weather is mild and hiking trails are easy to navigate.
