La Cala de Mijas, locality
La Cala de Mijas is a small coastal locality in Malaga Province with a natural harbor and shallow waters. The place extends along a sandy beach with traditional fishing houses, restaurants, and shops that line the waterfront promenade.
The place served as an important fishing and trading port since ancient times and was used by Phoenicians and later by Romans. During the Middle Ages and early modern period, the settlement developed into an established fishing village that exists to this day.
The place takes its name from the shallow bay that surrounds it and shaped the lives of fishermen for generations. Today you can still see small boats on the shore, and many visitors watch the daily routine of local fishermen at work.
The place is easy to explore on foot, with wide paths along the beach and plenty of room for walking. There is parking nearby, and most shops and restaurants are open during the day in season.
The village retains its small size and original character while many nearby places have become major tourist destinations. This relative isolation allows visitors to see how life along the coast looked before massive tourist development.
