Ordovician Tunnel of El Fabar, Geological formation at Ribadesella, Spain.
The Ordovician Tunnel of El Fabar is a natural rock formation near Ribadesella containing dark clayey sediments and layered stones. The exposed walls display sections of the Sueve Formation where fossils from the Ordovician period have been uncovered.
This formation was discovered in 1998 during construction of the A8 freeway, when cutting through the rock exposed the interior. The tunnel contained numerous fossils that had never been documented in Spain before.
The Museo del Territorio de Ribadesella exhibits numerous specimens collected from El Fabar, contributing to local geological education and research initiatives.
Access is provided through marked pathways along the rock face, with information panels explaining geological features and discoveries. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and follow the posted signs.
The rocks here show traces of petroleum formation from the Paleozoic era, which is rarely documented in this part of Europe. These traces help scientists understand how oil formed in this region during ancient times.
