Hex – the Legend of the Towers, Dark ride in Alton Towers Resort, England
Hex – the Legend of the Towers is an indoor attraction at Alton Towers Resort in England that combines optical illusions, physical effects, and a moving platform. The platform creates sensations of rotation and swinging within a stone vault while visitors move through different chambers.
The installation opened in 2000 and uses both the authentic gothic ruins of Alton Towers and a specially built vault chamber. Its theme draws on elements of a regional legend involving the fifteenth Earl of Shrewsbury and a cursed oak tree from the nineteenth century.
British actor Jim Carter lends his voice to the experience, narrating a dark tale rooted in Staffordshire folklore. The multimedia presentation connects visitors to regional stories that still echo through the grounds, making local legends tangible as you move through the chambers.
Visitors must measure at least 90 centimeters to enter, and children between 90 and 120 centimeters require adult supervision during the roughly five-minute experience. The movements can feel intense for some guests, so a calm approach at the start of the day works well.
The experience uses the genuine gothic stone walls of the historic estate as part of the setting, blurring the line between real architecture and themed construction. Inside the vault stands an experimental apparatus that generates mysterious movements, fooling visitors' spatial perception.
