Wicker Man, Wooden roller coaster in Alton Towers Resort, United Kingdom
Wicker Man is a wooden roller coaster at Alton Towers Resort in the United Kingdom, running along 795 meters (2608 feet) of track that passes through a 15-meter-tall (49 feet) burning timber figure. The structure combines traditional wooden rail design with modern pyrotechnics, reaching speeds of up to 68 kilometers per hour (42 miles per hour).
The roller coaster opened in March 2018 at a cost of £16 million. It was the first wooden roller coaster built in the United Kingdom since 1996.
The name and design draw on Celtic tradition, with the fictional Beornen community serving as a framing narrative. Flame effects and carved timber emphasize the nature-focused theme of the attraction.
The ride lasts three and a half minutes and requires a minimum height of 1.2 meters (3 feet 11 inches). It is advisable to visit outside peak times, as queues can grow longer on weekends and holidays.
The timber figure at the center of the ride is fitted with flame effects that remain active during operation. This combination of wooden construction and fire is rare in Europe.
