Galactica, Flying roller coaster at Alton Towers Resort, England.
Galactica is a steel roller coaster at Alton Towers Resort in England where riders hang beneath the track in a flying position. The route runs close to the ground and through shaped passageways along a length of 840 meters (2,756 feet).
The installation opened in 2002 under the name Air as the first flying coaster of this design. In 2016 a redesign took place with the new name Galactica and a space travel theme.
The concept of traveling through outer space shapes the experience with futuristic portals and a design that reflects advances in entertainment engineering. Visitors find here a link between science and leisure that brings imagination and technology together.
Riders must be at least 1.4 meters (4 feet 7 inches) tall to board. The coaster handles up to 1500 people per hour, so queues can form during busy periods.
Passengers board in a seated position before the seats tilt forward and bring them into flying position. This movement creates the feeling of gliding through the air at 75 kilometers per hour (47 miles per hour).
