Runaway Mine Train

Runaway Mine Train is a steel roller coaster at Alton Towers that takes you through a mining-themed landscape called Katanga Canyon. The ride has brown-colored track and support structures, winding through the canyon with several different sections that make up the full circuit.

The ride opened in the early 1990s and stands as one of the park's original attractions from that era. It was designed and built by MACK Rides, a German manufacturer known for creating dependable family-friendly coasters.

The mining-themed attraction connects with the Congo River Rapids through a shared tunnel, creating interactions between riders of both attractions.

Children need to reach a certain height to board, with different requirements depending on whether they ride with an adult or alone. The train holds a good number of passengers and can run multiple circuits through the canyon on busier days.

The coaster uses a special powered system that allows the ride to run multiple back-to-back circuits when the park is quiet. This means visitors might experience two or three loops through the canyon in a single ride session.
