Church of St Mary Magdalene, North Ockendon, Medieval parish church in North Ockendon, England.
The Church of St Mary Magdalene is a medieval parish church in North Ockendon featuring a substantial stone tower and a pathway lined with lime trees leading to the entrance. The building sits on spacious grounds next to the former site of North Ockendon Hall.
The church was built in 1301 and served as the religious center of the community for centuries. A major restoration took place in 1858 under architect Richard Armstrong, funded by local landowner Richard Benyon.
The interior holds several monuments to the Poyntz family, including a stone effigy of Sir Gabriel Poyntz and his wife resting on a marble tomb chest. These memorials reflect the family's deep connection to the place over generations.
The building is open every Saturday morning from 10 AM to noon, allowing visitors to explore the interior at a convenient time. Regular services take place monthly, giving the place an active role in community life.
The tower contains six bells designed for change ringing and arranged in an unusual hanging configuration that surprises bell enthusiasts. This technical feature draws ringers from the surrounding area who appreciate the challenge.
