Devon Railway Centre, Railway museum in Bickleigh, England
The Devon Railway Centre is a railway museum on the site of a former Cadeleigh station, where two railways in different gauges operate today. One system runs on 2-foot gauge track while the other is a 7.25-inch miniature line, and a model railway exhibition is also displayed.
The site was a station on the Exe Valley Railway, which connected Exeter to Dulverton from 1884 until its closure in 1963. After the line shut down, the location was later transformed into a museum and now preserves historic railway equipment from different periods.
The place shows the heritage of local railway history through working narrow gauge lines that visitors can experience firsthand. The preserved locomotives and coaches tell the story of how railways mattered to rural communities in this region.
The site is easily accessible by car with plenty of parking available for visitors. There is a cafe serving food and drinks along with play areas for children, making a half-day visit comfortable.
One of the locomotives here is a rare Orenstein & Koppel steam engine from 1912, a German machine that spent many years working in Wales. Such vehicles with this particular history are extremely uncommon to find in museums.
