M4 Thames Bridge, Highway bridge in Buckinghamshire, England
The M4 Thames Bridge connects Dorney Reach in Buckinghamshire to Bray near Maidenhead, carrying four lanes of motorway traffic across the River Thames with steel and concrete construction. The structure forms a key link in the major transport corridor between London and western England.
Construction of the M4 Thames Bridge took place in 1961 as part of Britain's motorway expansion programme. The bridge was built to improve transport links between London and the western counties.
The bridge forms one of three structures carrying motorway traffic over the Thames, alongside the M25 Runnymede Bridge and M3 Chertsey Bridge.
The bridge is accessible only to vehicles using the M4 motorway, as it is motorway infrastructure. Pedestrians and cyclists cannot cross the structure directly.
The structure reaches a height of 25 feet 6 inches and stands approximately 500 yards upstream from Bray Lock, near an unnamed island extending from Pigeonhill Ayt.
