St James' Church, Altham, Medieval parish church in Altham, England
St James' Church is a parish church built from sandstone with a slate roof, featuring a three-bay nave with side aisles, a south porch, a two-bay chancel, and a west tower. The structure shows the layered building work of the late medieval period across its various sections.
The church was founded in 1140 and originally dedicated to Saint Mary before taking its current name. Most of what stands today was built or rebuilt during the 15th and 16th centuries, reflecting the religious needs of that era.
The interior holds an octagonal baptismal font carved with panels depicting the Instruments of the Passion, a gift from Whalley Abbey's abbot during the medieval period. This piece reflects the medieval craftsmanship that connected local churches with monastic communities.
The building is open to visitors on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from June through September, making these the best times to see the interior. The churchyard is accessible year-round and the location is easily walkable from the village center.
The churchyard holds the graves of three British soldiers from World War I and a Canadian seaman from World War II. These burials connect this village location to the broader conflicts of the 20th century.
