St Matthew's Church, Silverhill, Anglican church in Silverhill, Hastings, England
St Matthew's Church in Silverhill is a red brick building that combines Early English Gothic and Decorated Gothic architectural styles, distinguished by stone trimmings and multicolored interior bands. Inside, visitors find a stone reredos by architect Aston Webb, an octagonal carved stone font from 1888, and a Willis organ installed in 1890.
Construction of the present church began in 1884 under architect John Loughborough Pearson, replacing an earlier building from 1861 that had served the expanding population. The incomplete tower was repurposed as a porch, with a wooden spire added to the roof instead of completing the originally designed tower.
The church was established as a gathering place for the expanding local population and remains a focal point for worship and community life in Silverhill. Its red brick structure has become part of the neighborhood's identity, reflecting how faith and community have shaped this residential area.
The church is open for regular worship services and community events, allowing visitors to view its architecture and interior furnishings during available hours. It is wise to check opening times beforehand, as these may vary depending on services and private occasions.
The incomplete tower was creatively repurposed as an entrance porch rather than completed or removed. This practical solution reflects 19th-century adaptability and gives the building a distinctive feature that tells the story of its construction journey.
