Thandayuthapani Temples, Chettikulam, Hindu temple complex in Chettikulam, India

The Thandayuthapani Temples in Chettikulam form a complex with multiple shrines positioned at different elevations and connected by stone staircases. The entire site displays traditional South Indian temple design with detailed stonework carved across walls and doorways.

According to tradition, a Pandya ruler founded this temple after discovering a divine manifestation of Lord Muruga on a hilltop at this location. The site grew over centuries into an important pilgrimage destination for the region.

This complex honors Lord Muruga, attracting large crowds during Thai Poosam and Panguni Uthiram festivals when silver chariots are pulled through the grounds in procession. These celebrations span two weeks and form the spiritual center of local devotional practice.

The temple complex requires climbing a long series of stone steps, so wear sturdy shoes and allow time for the ascent. Early morning or late afternoon visits work best to avoid the midday heat and crowds.

A nearby river called the Panchanadhi carries water believed to have healing properties, which visitors traditionally collect and take home. This connection between the temple and the river runs deep in local beliefs and sets the place apart.
