Column of Phocas, Victory column in Roman Forum, Italy
The Corinthian marble column stands 13.6 meters tall on a white marble cubic base with fluted shafts in the center of the Forum.
The Byzantine exarch Smaragdus erected this monument in 608 to honor Emperor Phocas, who had given the Pantheon to Pope Boniface IV.
The Latin inscription on the base celebrates Emperor Phocas and expresses gratitude for benefits received during his reign through detailed carved text.
Visitors access the column during Roman Forum opening hours, with guided tours explaining its position among surrounding archaeological structures.
This monument represents the final civic structure built in the Roman Forum, marking the end of an architectural era spanning many centuries.
