San Bartolomeo all'Isola, Minor basilica on Tiber Island, Rome, Italy
The church structure displays a Baroque facade with two levels, a portico, and three naves supported by ancient Roman columns.
Emperor Otto III ordered the construction of the church in 998 on the location of a former temple dedicated to Aesculapius.
The basilica preserves the relics of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle beneath the high altar in a red porphyry sarcophagus.
The basilica opens its doors to visitors at Piazza di San Bartolomeo all'Isola 22, between Trastevere and the Jewish Quarter.
The Brotherhood established in 1760 collected bodies from the Tiber River and stored the bones in the basement crypt.
