Mount Mojo, mountain in Italy
Mount Mojo is a quiet hill in Sicily covered with peach trees and green fields. It formed from volcanic activity and displays dark rock along with fertile soil that supports the local vegetation.
This mountain was once an active volcano whose lava flows covered the land along the Alcantara River to the coast near Capo Schisò in Giardini Naxos. In the 17th century, the town of Mojo was founded around the dormant crater and developed into a small settlement with local significance.
The name Mojo comes from 'mòdio', an old container for storing grain, which appears in local folklore. The region has been known for peach cultivation for centuries, and the fruit remains central to local identity and seasonal celebrations.
The place is reachable by car from Messina or Catania via the A18 highway to Giardini Naxos, then continue on state road 116. Bring water and sun protection since the climate is warm and dry; visiting in the morning offers better light and cooler temperatures.
Local folklore tells of a farmer who stole his brother's grain and piled it into a hill; according to the story, God punished him with lightning, which made the land exceptionally fertile. This tale remains woven into the place's local identity.
