Yumenoshima Tropical Greenhouse Dome, Tropical greenhouse dome in Yumenoshima Park, Japan
The Yumenoshima Tropical Greenhouse Dome is a greenhouse facility with three interconnected glass domes located in Yumenoshima Park. The complex houses over 1,000 tropical plant species across climate-controlled spaces spanning about 1,500 square meters.
The facility was built in 1988 on reclaimed land as part of Tokyo's effort to transform a former landfill site into green spaces. Architect Hiroshi Ōune designed the structure as an example of sustainable urban renewal.
The greenhouse functions as a place where visitors encounter tropical ecosystems and discover rare plants from the Ogasawara Islands up close. The displays show how these plants thrive in their natural environments.
The greenhouse is about 13 minutes on foot from Shinkiba Station and opens daily from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Admission is 250 yen for adults and 100 yen for students.
The greenhouse uses excess heat from a neighboring waste processing facility to maintain ideal temperatures for tropical plant growth year-round. This practical energy solution demonstrates how industry and nature can work together in urban spaces.
