Makaino Farm, Ranch in Fujinomiya, Japan
Makaino Farm is a ranch on the Asagiri Plateau, at the foot of Mount Fuji, in the city of Fujinomiya, Japan. The grounds are divided into open pastures, fenced pens, and barn areas where different animals, including sheep, goats, cows, horses, and small animals like hamsters, are kept.
The farm was founded in 1970 and grew over the following decades into one of the more established agricultural operations in the region. Over time it opened its doors to visitors, combining working dairy and livestock farming with a public-facing side.
Feeding and touching the animals is a normal part of a visit here, not a special add-on, so children can get close to sheep, goats, and smaller animals at their own pace. This kind of direct contact with farm life is something many urban visitors in Japan rarely get a chance to experience.
The farm can be reached by bus from Fujinomiya Station, and the ride takes around 30 minutes. The grounds cover a good amount of space, so allow enough time to move between the different animal areas without rushing.
The farm sells a monthly pass that stays valid for 30 days from the date of purchase, which means a visitor can return as many times as they like within that window. This is an uncommon policy for a farm of this kind and makes it easy to come back at different times of day or in different weather.
