Ōe Bridge, Historic arch bridge in Kita-ku, Japan
The Ōe Bridge is an arch structure spanning the Dojima River with four concrete arches, measuring 81.5 meters in length and 37 meters in width. The structure connects both riverbanks and forms part of the urban transportation network.
An original bridge at this location dates to the Genroku period, but the current structure was completed in 1935 following a design competition. The reconstruction drew on European bridge-building traditions while maintaining Japanese architectural characteristics.
The bridge is part of the Fifty Bridges of Naniwa collection and received designation as an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 2008. It connects neighborhoods and allows visitors to cross while experiencing the surrounding riverside urban landscape.
The bridge is located near Yodoyabashi Station on the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line and carries National Route 25. Access is available for pedestrians and vehicles, with the area seeing regular daytime activity.
The bridge design combines influences from Seine River bridges in Paris with Japanese building elements. This fusion resulted from a design competition that sought to incorporate European structural methods within a Japanese aesthetic.
