Palazzo Massimo di Rignano, Baroque palace near Campidoglio, Rome, Italy
Palazzo Massimo di Rignano is a Baroque palace located at the corner between Piazza d'Aracoeli and Via del Teatro di Marcello. The building rises across three floors with varying window designs: the first level features architraved frames while the upper stories display simpler window treatments.
The palace was built in the 15th century for the Boccabella family and later passed to the Massimo di Rignano family. They commissioned architect Carlo Fontana to undertake major renovations and redesign the structure.
The facade displays elements typical of Roman Baroque with decorated windows and deep cornices supported by brackets. This design reflects the taste of the wealthy families who lived here.
The palace is easily visible from Via del Teatro di Marcello and sits in a lively area with numerous other historical buildings nearby. Morning visits offer the best light for viewing and photographing the ornate facade.
Within the internal courtyard lies a Baroque fountain designed by Carlo Fontana where water flows from lion mouths into a shell beneath a Triton statue. This hidden work of art reveals the family's passion for classical mythological imagery.
