Aichiken Forest Park, forest park in Nagoya, Aichi, Japan
Aichiken Forest Park is a large green space in Owariasahi, Moriyama Ward, with a botanical garden, forest paths, and open lawns covering approximately 468 hectares. The park features themed walking areas showcasing different tree types, a sunken garden with seasonal flowers, water features with ponds, and facilities for sports and recreation.
The land was heavily deforested in the late Edo period for porcelain production, becoming barren and rocky. The Owari-Tokugawa family recognized its importance and protected the area, leading to its restoration and establishment as Japan's first forest park in 1934.
The park carries the name of Aichi Prefecture and serves as an important place where local residents and visitors connect with nature through walking and quiet recreation. The diverse plant collections reflect how the area values and protects rare species native to the region.
The park is easily accessible by car or public transit and has a large parking lot with over 900 spaces for visitors. Accessible restrooms, wheelchair rentals, and helpful staff make it comfortable for visitors with mobility needs.
The park showcases a remarkable recovery from massive deforestation that occurred during the porcelain-making era, and was intentionally designed as Japan's first forest park as a restoration effort. This transformation demonstrates how degraded landscapes can be revived and return to ecological health over time.
