Taiyō-ji

Taiyō-ji is a Buddhist temple perched on a mountain peak about two hours from Tokyo, with its main hall designed to capture morning light through open windows. The site offers overnight accommodations for visitors who wish to take part in structured daily programs.

The temple was founded in 1757 when its wooden structures were built and have remained largely unchanged since then. This architecture connects visitors directly to religious building practices of the 18th century.

The monk who resides here previously worked in an office and now manages all aspects of the temple stay program. He conducts services in both Japanese and English, offering an unexpected bridge to the practice.
