愛宕橋, Steel bridge over Hirose River in Sendai, Japan
The Atago Bridge is a steel structure spanning the Hirose River in Sendai that connects two districts on opposite banks. It features a modern girder design and carries both pedestrian and vehicle traffic across the waterway.
Engineer Saburo Saeki built the first suspension bridge here in 1900 and collected a small toll from people crossing. The structure has been rebuilt several times after major floods destroyed earlier versions.
Two temples once stood near the bridge and held spiritual importance for local communities in earlier times. Their former presence continues to shape how people connect with this location.
The bridge is easily accessible during daytime and provides a straightforward crossing between two residential areas. Visitors can walk or drive across, with clear access points on both sides.
The bridge carries an unusual history of being destroyed by major floods and a significant structural collapse in 1913. Its current design reflects lessons learned from these destructive events that reshaped how it was rebuilt.
