Matsuo-ji, Buddhist temple in Azumino, Japan.

Matsuo-ji is a temple with traditional wooden architecture and multiple halls set against mountain surroundings. The grounds contain Buddhist statues and structures that reflect its role as a place of worship and spiritual practice.

The temple was founded in 651 and ranks among the oldest Buddhist temples in Nagano Prefecture. Its structures were recognized as Important Cultural Property of Japan due to their architectural heritage.

The temple maintains connections with the Kōyasan Shingon-shū Buddhist sect, and religious ceremonies take place throughout the year. You can observe how spiritual practices remain woven into the daily life of the site.

The temple sits next to the Hotaka Local Museum, making it easy to combine visits for a fuller cultural experience. The grounds feature mixed terrain and some elevation changes that call for sturdy footwear.

The temple gardens shift their appearance through four distinct seasons, with each time creating a different landscape mood. This connection between the grounds and the natural rhythms of the region reflects deliberate design choices.
