Sestiga della Pace, Bronze sculpture at Arco della Pace, Milan, Italy
The Sestiga della Pace is a bronze sculpture atop the Arch of Peace in Milan, depicting six horses pulling a chariot that carries the Goddess of Peace. Rising above the arch at just over four meters, the goddess figure forms the crowning element of this grand monument.
The sculpture was installed on the arch in 1837, marking the completion of the Arch of Peace's long construction period. The arch itself had begun as a significant project during the Napoleonic era before being finished decades later.
The figure portrays the Goddess of Peace arriving in the city as a symbol of hope and protection. On the chariot, decorative elements reference local traditions of prosperity and artistic achievement.
You can view the sculpture from Piazza Sempione below and appreciate it from multiple angles around the monument. The best views come from walking around the base of the arch or from the surrounding park areas.
The name 'sestiga' was coined specifically for this work, blending the classical terms for two-horse and four-horse chariots into a single word for six horses. This linguistic creation remains unique to this monument alone.
