Arena Civica, Multi-purpose sports stadium in Parco Sempione, Milan, Italy.
Arena Civica is a multi-purpose stadium in Parco Sempione, Milan, Italy, with a grass field, a running track, and stands built in a neoclassical architectural style. The venue hosts football, rugby, and athletics events and sits within a park landscape near the city center.
Architect Luigi Canonica designed this stadium, which opened in 1807 as part of Napoleon's city development plan for Milan. The arena served initially for military parades and public celebrations before later being used for sports competitions.
The Italian national football team played its first official match here in 1910, winning 6-2 against France. That victory marked the beginning of Italian football's international story on this ground.
The stadium holds 10,000 spectators and provides modern facilities for football, rugby, and athletics competitions throughout the year. Access is through the park, and the open layout allows for a good view of the venue.
Naval battles were recreated in the 19th century by flooding the entire field with water from underground channels. These spectacular water shows drew thousands of spectators and temporarily turned the stadium into an artificial lagoon.
