Kaname Falls

Kaname Falls pours its waters through dense forest in Kumamoto Prefecture, forming a natural cascade surrounded by steep mountainsides. The water flows over several levels, creating different pools where the current displays its force.

The falls gained national recognition in 1990 when Japan's Ministry of Environment added it to the prestigious One Hundred Waterfalls of Japan list. This official distinction brought it wider attention among nature enthusiasts across the country.

The waterfall inspires local artisans to incorporate its forms into traditional crafts, showing how nature shapes artistic practice. You can find these handmade works in workshops and shops throughout Hitoyoshi.

You can reach the falls via marked hiking trails from central Hitoyoshi, with parking available at the entrance area. The walk takes about an hour and requires moderate fitness, especially on the wetter paths near the cascade.

The constant water spray creates a unique habitat where specialized plant species thrive that you rarely see elsewhere. These mosses, ferns, and moisture-loving plants turn the rock walls green and give the place its distinctive look.
