Ōmura Cave Tombs

The Ōmura Cave Tombs contain twenty-four rock-cut burial chambers carved into the hills of Kumamoto Prefecture, featuring intricate equine carvings and bell designs.

These burial chambers, established between the 6th and 8th centuries during the Late Kofun period, served as final resting places for local elite members.

The tombs display carved motifs of five horses and three bells, along with geometric patterns near the entrance lintels, representing burial customs of ancient Japan.

Visitors can access the archaeological site by following marked paths through Hitoyoshi, with informational signs providing details about each tomb structure.

Two specific chambers, labeled as Tombs 7 and 8, contain rare flat relief carvings depicting both saddled horses and young foals within their stone walls.
