Ōmura Cave Tombs, Cave tomb complex in Hitoyoshi, Japan.

Ōmura Cave Tombs is a complex of twenty-four rock-cut burial chambers carved into the hills of Kumamoto Prefecture, featuring detailed carvings of horses and bell designs. The chambers vary in size and decoration, with some displaying geometric patterns and others showing animal depictions.

These burial chambers were created between the 6th and 8th centuries during the late Kofun period as final resting places for local elite members. The period marks a shift toward more elaborate burial practices in the region.

The carved horses and bells in these tombs show what ancient Japanese elites valued in their burial rituals. These symbols reveal how important equestrian life and spiritual objects were to the people buried here.

Access to this archaeological site is by walking paths through Hitoyoshi, with information signs explaining the history and layout of each tomb. Wear sturdy shoes as the paths are uneven and wind through forested areas.

Two specific chambers, labeled as Tombs 7 and 8, contain rare flat relief carvings showing saddled horses and young foals carved directly into their stone walls. These detailed animal depictions are among the finest preserved examples of such skilled carving from this era.
