Shiroyama Kōen, Urban park in Ayase, Japan
Shiroyama Kōen is an urban park in Ayase, a city in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. It features open lawns, a traditional Japanese garden, a covered barbecue area, and a roller slide for children.
The park was built on the site of an old castle that once served as a stronghold for a local warrior. Some of the original earthworks are still visible today as you walk through the grounds.
Around May and October, about 500 roses in roughly 66 varieties bloom across the park, drawing many visitors who come just for the flowers. Outside of bloom season, families spread out on the grass for picnics while children take turns on the roller slide.
The park's paths are mostly paved, making it easy to get around for most visitors. There is no train station nearby, so the most convenient way to arrive is by bus from the city center.
Every summer and winter solstice, hundreds of candles are lit across the park grounds after dark. The event is tied to a message about protecting the environment and gives the park a completely different feel at night.
