Kakurinji, Buddhist temple at Mount Washigao, Japan
Kakurinji temple stands at 470 meters elevation, featuring cedar trees, a three-story pagoda, and views extending to the Pacific Ocean and mountain peaks.
Emperor Kanmu ordered the construction of Kakurinji in 798, and Buddhist monk Kobo Daishi established it after observing two white cranes protecting a golden statue.
The temple holds a 90-centimeter Jizo Bosatsu statue carved from a sacred tree, which remains the principal religious object of worship within the complex.
Visitors need to walk 6 kilometers uphill from Ikuna bus stop to reach the temple, as no direct public transportation serves the mountain location.
Twenty-one stone pillars from the Muromachi period mark the pilgrimage path to Kakurinji, creating a National Historic Site designated in 1998.
