Monastery of St. Nikolas of Japan in Ajiro

The Monastery of St. Nikolas of Japan in Ajiro is an Orthodox monastic complex with separate buildings designed for different purposes, including a guest house for pilgrims, a library, and a candle workshop. The entire facility is organized into distinct functional areas that support both religious life and daily operations.

The monastery was founded after the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church approved the construction project in 2005. The formal building process began following this approval to establish a center for Orthodox religious practice in Japan.

The monastery preserves a large altar Gospel translated into Japanese by St. Nicholas, which is distributed to Orthodox cathedrals across Tokyo, Kyoto, and Sendai. This text holds an important place in the religious life of the region.

The complex is easily accessible on foot directly from Ajiro Station, making it convenient for visitors to reach. It is administered by the Tokyo Eparchy, and checking opening details beforehand is advisable.

The first Divine Liturgy took place on the night of November 23, 2018, and continued until dawn. This nighttime celebration marked the beginning of active religious practice at this location.
