法光寺, Buddhist temple in Nanbu, Japan.

Hokoji is a Buddhist temple in Nanbu featuring a three-story pagoda called Joyoto built in 1949, recognized as the tallest wooden structure of its type in the country. The grounds also contain an ancient cedar tree over 1,000 years old that has witnessed centuries of religious ceremonies.

The temple developed as an important religious center and grew over centuries to become a significant site for Buddhist practice in the region. The 20th-century pagoda represents a modern addition to the older spiritual traditions established here.

The temple serves as a space where visitors and practitioners participate in meditation and receive teachings from Buddhist monks in traditional settings. These sessions are central to understanding the spiritual practices that have been maintained here.

The temple is accessible to visitors during specific seasons, with spring through autumn being the best time to visit. Walking paths on the grounds are generally easy to navigate, so wear comfortable shoes and allow adequate time to explore the area at a leisurely pace.

Nearby stands Senbonmatsu-namiki, a tree-lined avenue of one thousand pine trees recognized among Japan's top 100 pine locations. This historic tree-lined path offers a quiet place to walk and creates a natural extension to the temple grounds.
