岩城大桥, Transportation bridge in Kamijima, Japan
Iwagi Bridge (岩城大桥) is a road bridge in the Kamijima area of Japan, crossing the waters of the Seto Inland Sea to link Iwagi Island with Seinamijima Island. Pedestrians can cross on foot at any time, while cyclists are required to push their bicycles rather than ride across the span.
The bridge opened on March 20, 2022, and completed the Yumeshima Kaido road network, which links several islands in the Kamijima area. The network was built over several years through a series of separate projects, each adding another connection between islands.
The bridge connects island residents who once depended on ferries to reach school, work, or neighbors on other islands. Today it is part of the daily routine for the small communities on both sides of the water.
The bridge is open to pedestrians at all hours and can be crossed on foot without any restrictions. Those arriving by bicycle should be prepared to push their bikes the full length of the crossing, as riding is not allowed.
Because this bridge was the final link in the Yumeshima Kaido network, it is now possible to travel between all the connected islands on foot or by bicycle without ever boarding a boat. This kind of continuous overland crossing is rare among the many island groups scattered across the Seto Inland Sea.
