Lambertini tower

Lambertini tower is a medieval defensive structure integrated within the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo in central Bologna. The building displays stone walls, windows from different periods, and a rooftop area that invites exploration.

The Lambertini family built this defensive tower in the early medieval period as a symbol of their power and protection. Later the structure served different purposes: as a women's prison and eventually as the home of Bologna's first mechanical clock.

The tower takes its name from the powerful Lambertini family, who shaped medieval Bologna's political life and produced prominent church leaders. Today visitors see how such family names marked the urban landscape and social order.

The tower sits near a restaurant at ground level that allows views into its interior structure. The surrounding old town offers many historical buildings within walking distance.

In the early 20th century, architect Alfonso Rubbiani carried out major renovation work that added new windows and a balcony in neo-medieval style. This transformation reveals how restorers reshaped the appearance of older buildings according to their vision.
