Hōtō-ji, Buddhist temple in Fukakusa, Fushimi-ku, Japan.

Hōtō-ji is a Buddhist temple in Fukakusa, Fushimi, with several buildings arranged across the sloping terrain of Mount Fukakusa. The complex includes a main hall, a multistory pagoda, and multiple gates integrated into the natural landscape of the hillside.

This temple was founded in 899 by the Buddhist monk Shōbō and served as an important center for spreading Buddhist teachings. During the Muromachi period, it underwent major architectural renovations that shaped much of what can be seen today.

The temple offers visitors a chance to observe active Buddhist practice, with people engaged in worship and quiet reflection throughout the grounds. The age-old structures and landscape speak to centuries of spiritual devotion maintained in this place.

The temple is within walking distance from Ryukoku University Station and is accessible to visitors daily. Those interested in meditation can inquire onsite about regularly scheduled Buddhist practice sessions.

The temple's pagoda stands as one of the oldest surviving multistory pagodas in Kyoto, with distinctive medieval craftsmanship visible in its construction. Visitors can examine these details up close and appreciate the technical skill that went into this historic structure.
