Hachiōji City Children’s Museum of Science, Science museum and planetarium in Ōyokochō, Hachiōji, Japan
The Hachiōji City Children's Museum of Science is a science museum and planetarium in the Ōyokochō area of Hachiōji, Japan. It is spread across two floors with hands-on learning zones, a space simulation area, and live science demonstrations open to all ages.
The museum opened on January 28, 1989, and quickly became a reference point for science education in the Hachiōji area. A renovation in 2017 brought new exhibits and updated the learning spaces throughout the building.
The Hachiōji Corner displays a real elephant tusk and a meteorite found in the local area. These objects connect everyday life in the region to the broader world of natural science in a way that feels very personal.
The layout is easy to follow and the signage is clear on both floors, so visitors can move around without difficulty. Allow several hours to spend time in the hands-on areas and catch one of the planetarium sessions.
The second floor has a one-tenth scale model of the International Space Station alongside a working simulator of the asteroid explorer Hayabusa. Together, these two exhibits give visitors a concrete sense of Japan's presence in space exploration.
