大善寺, Buddhist temple in Hachioji, Japan
Daizenji is located in the Otani district of Hachioji and features a main hall constructed in 1981. The temple grounds contain a large cemetery with hundreds of graves that serves as a significant burial site for the region.
The temple was founded between 1573 and 1591 under Hojo Ujiteru, originally positioned near Takiyama Castle. After a later relocation, it developed into a Buddhist facility with continued religious practice through the centuries.
The burial ground here holds the graves of several well-known Japanese figures, including writer Matsumoto Seichō and manga artist Akatsuka Fujio. These individuals from literature and art left their lasting mark at this location.
The site offers parking for approximately 80 cars and one bus, which is practical for larger visiting groups and deliveries. From Keio Hachioji Station, the walking route takes about 20 minutes.
After World War II, the temple operated independently for several decades before returning to the Jodo Buddhist sect in 2018. This return to an established Buddhist community marked a significant turning point in its modern history.
