Samhwasa, Buddhist temple in Donghae City, South Korea

Samhwasa is a temple in Mureung Valley, situated at roughly 500 meters elevation between Mount Dutasan and Mount Cheongaksan and surrounded by mountain landscapes. The grounds are marked by a Three-Story Stone Pagoda and twelve stone statues of Spirit Generals that stand throughout the complex.

The temple was founded in 642 during the reign of Queen Seondeok by Master Jajang. Following major fires in 1820 and 1907, the structures underwent significant reconstruction.

The temple complex houses a Three-Story Stone Pagoda and an Iron Seated Rocana Buddha, both registered as Korean National Treasures. The walls of the Cheonwangmun Gate display paintings of the Four Heavenly Kings, protective figures central to Buddhist tradition.

The best way to reach the temple is by taking Bus 111 from Donghae Bus Terminal, with the journey lasting roughly one hour and ten minutes. Sturdy footwear is recommended for exploring the mountain terrain, and warm clothing becomes necessary during cooler seasons.

The grounds also feature stone statues of Spirit Generals, ancient guardians that traditionally protected sacred sites in Korean Buddhism. These figures remain quietly positioned throughout the temple grounds today.
