Zamek na wzgórzu Grojec, Medieval castle ruins in Żywiec, Poland
Zamek na wzgórzu Grojec is a castle ruin located on a hilltop in Żywiec at approximately 612 meters in elevation. The remains show the layout of a defensive structure with a dry moat and oval-shaped earthwork still visible around the site.
During the 15th century, knights Borzywoj and Wlodek Skrzynski built a fortress on this hill as their stronghold. They used it as a base for military operations across the surrounding region.
The place is named after Grojec Hill, reflecting its importance to the local landscape and regional identity. Today, visitors can observe how this location remains a focal point for understanding the medieval period in the Żywiec area.
The site is accessible via a marked yellow hiking trail that starts from downtown Żywiec and passes through Maly Grojec. The path continues toward Żywiec-Zablocie and provides a straightforward approach to the ruins.
Excavations in 1937 and 1983 uncovered metal artifacts and a silver coin from the reign of King Wladyslaw Jagiello. These discoveries reveal the site's role in medieval trade and daily life of the fortress occupants.
