Vučo’s House on the Sava River, Art Nouveau mansion in Savamala district, Belgrade, Serbia
Vuco's House on the Sava River is a three-story residence with Art Nouveau features located in Belgrade's Savski Venac district. The building combines commercial spaces on the ground floor with residential apartments above and displays decorated facades with symmetrical balconies and wrought iron railings.
The building was constructed in 1908 by architect Dimitrije T. Leko for merchant Đorđe Nikola Vučo, reflecting the architectural tastes of Belgrade's prosperous trading community. It survived World War II bombing and underwent repairs in 1946.
The facade displays the owner's Cyrillic initials and decorative elements including a woman's head with shell motifs and garlands. These details reflect the taste and wealth typical of prosperous merchant families in early 1900s Belgrade.
The building sits on Karađorđeva Street and is easy to see from outside as it stands alongside other historic structures near the river. Walking through the neighborhood is the best way to appreciate the architecture and the character of this area along the waterfront.
The residence was once the home of a successful merchant whose name it still carries today, though it now houses multiple apartments. The Sava River shaped this part of town and made it a center of commerce and prosperity in the early 1900s.
