Taynitskaya Tower of Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin

The Taynitskaya Tower is a round defensive structure within the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, positioned on a steep slope overlooking the Pochayna ravine. It features three tiers of loopholes for shooting and a watchtower positioned at the top.

The fortress was established in the early 17th century, and this tower formed part of the original defensive system. During World War II, its roof was removed to allow for the installation of anti-aircraft guns protecting the city against German air raids.

The tower takes its name from a secret underground passage that once connected to the Pochayna River, enabling defenders to collect water during lengthy sieges. This hidden route was a crucial advantage for those protecting the fortress.

Following renovation work completed in 2019, visitors can reach an observation platform at the tower's highest level. The location on a steep slope means sturdy footwear and caution during wet weather are advisable.

During the 17th century, this tower stored gunpowder, and a powder factory was constructed in the adjacent ravine. This facility proved essential for supplying ammunition to the fortress over many decades.
