Kvinnohuset, Residential condominium in Stadshagen district, Stockholm, Sweden.
Kvinnohuset is a 14-story residential building with yellow brick facades situated on a hillside overlooking Fleminggatan in Kungsholmen. It was designed to house over 200 residents in individual rooms with cooking facilities and included shared spaces for communal use.
The building was constructed between 1944 and 1947 during a period of severe housing shortage. It emerged from the vision of a political activist determined to create affordable housing for women during these challenging times.
The building served as a housing community for independent women seeking autonomy during an era when such independence was rare. Shared spaces like the cinema and salon created places where residents gathered and built connections.
The building is located at Welanders väg 12 and is easily recognized by its prominent hillside position. Visitors can observe the architectural details and blue enamel plaques on the facade that mark its significance.
The building inspired Ulla Isaksson's 1952 novel, which captured the story of independent women living in this community. This literary connection preserved the legacy of the residents in Swedish cultural memory.
