Qal'at Sukkara, Medieval castle in northern Syria

The stone fortress spans 220 meters by 150 meters, featuring multiple defensive towers and thick fortification walls along its perimeter.

Built upon a Roman camp around 1076 AD during the Seljuk period, the castle underwent major reconstruction between 1196 and 1218 under Sultan Al-Adil.

The castle walls display different construction techniques, from Roman foundations to Ayyubid, Mamluk, and Ottoman architectural modifications over centuries.

Recent archaeological excavations in the southwestern section revealed evidence of arms production, indicating the presence of military workshops within the complex.

The northern entrance, known as the Iron Gate, stands protected by three surrounding towers that formed an advanced defense system.
