Merzifon Saat Kulesi, Clock tower in Merzifon, Turkey
Merzifon Saat Kulesi is a cylindrical brick tower with round clock faces on each of its four sides positioned above the entrance gate of Celebi Mehmet Madrasah. The tower's prismatic corners and weight-driven mechanism allow its bells to ring through specially designed arched openings.
The tower was built in 1866 during the Ottoman period as part of a broader initiative to introduce modern timekeeping across the empire. Later restoration work under Amasya Governor Ziya Pasha ensured the structure could continue functioning through subsequent generations.
The tower represents the city's push to modernize its public life during a period of Ottoman reform and urban development. Today, visitors observe how it remains a focal point where locals and travelers naturally gather when moving through the city.
Access is free and visitors can explore the ground-level cafe which displays old photographs of the city throughout its walls. The interior space is modest, so visiting during quieter times of day offers a more comfortable experience.
The tower operates using a weight-driven mechanism from its original construction that still marks time with remarkable accuracy. This mechanical system remains a working example of 19th-century timekeeping technology that is rarely preserved in such functional condition.
