Guling Street Avant-garde Theatre, Experimental theater venue in Zhongzheng District, Taiwan
Guling Street Avant-garde Theatre is a small experimental performance venue in the Zhongzheng District of Taipei, housed in a restored brick building with thick walls and a column-free central hall. A separate rehearsal room is available for artists working on their productions.
The building was constructed in 1906 as a Japanese police station and went through major alterations in 1958. It formally opened as a theater dedicated to experimental work in 2002.
The Guling Street Avant-garde Theatre hosts performances that experiment with form, space, and storytelling in ways that differ from mainstream theater. The small hall places audiences very close to the performers, making each show feel direct and personal.
The venue is a short walk from Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall Station and easy to reach by metro. Because the hall is very small, it is worth checking show availability well in advance.
The original detention cell from the building's time as a police station is still visible inside. This room sits just steps from the performance hall, creating a direct contrast between the space's former and current use.
