National Museum of History, History museum in Zhongzheng District, Taipei, Taiwan
The National Museum of History is a history museum in Zhongzheng District, Taipei, Taiwan, currently closed for extensive renovation work. The three-story main building sits next to the Botanical Garden and normally displays collections spanning different periods of Taiwanese history.
The institution was founded in 1955 to preserve historical objects from across China that were brought to Taiwan after the civil war. Major expansions in the late 1990s added new exhibition spaces and climate-controlled storage rooms for delicate artworks.
Locals often refer to the building as "Shr Bo Guan", a name used in everyday speech since its opening. Visitors today notice the empty courtyard where temporary construction barriers alter the original appearance during renovation work.
Access is usually through Xiamen Street near the Botanical Garden entrance, but during renovation the building remains closed to the public. Information about the expected reopening date can be found on the institution's official website.
During closure, some collection pieces travel to exhibitions in other Taiwanese cities, keeping the objects accessible. The renovation work includes installing a new earthquake protection system designed for the seismically active region.
