Shevchenko Drama Theatre in Dnipro, Theatre building near Voskresenska Street, Dnipro, Ukraine
The Shevchenko Drama Theatre is a multi-story theatre building on Voskresenska Street in the center of Dnipro, housing a resident theatre company and several performance spaces of different sizes. The building serves both large productions and smaller-scale shows throughout the year.
The building was constructed in 1913 as an English Club and later transformed into a theatre. In 1918, under the government of Pavlo Skoropadskyi, it became one of Ukraine's first professional theatres.
The theatre is named after Taras Shevchenko, the most celebrated Ukrainian poet, which gives it a special place in the city's cultural life. Performances here often draw on Ukrainian literary tradition, making it a space where local audiences connect with their language and stories.
The theatre is in the center of Dnipro and easy to reach by public transport. Arriving a little before the show starts gives you time to find your seat and look around the building.
During World War II, the theatre company gave over 300 performances close to the front lines while based in Kazakhstan. Many of those shows were for soldiers and evacuees, far from any regular stage.
